At this point, I started painting in the foreground, namely the trees and the back of a highway road sign that you see at the bottom.

What I’ve always liked about Atlanta is that there’s a lot of tree space in the city. Heck, it’s even called the “City in a Forest”.

Atlanta sits at a higher elevation than virtually any major city in the Southeastern United States. For example, if you’re driving from Savannah, GA to Atlanta, you’re claiming a good 1,000+ feet of elevation. It’s like you’re climbing a mountain! That’s probably because it’s at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountain range.

Made some more progress on this painting finally! At about this point, I started to detail the sky, making it seem like it was about 7 PM. So, you can see the reflection of the sunset, but you’ll see that the sky behind the King & Queen Towers is dark blue.

Riding on Ed the Enormous Elephant

Glad to have finally colored this in! I’m quite happy with how this came out. This is meant to be an evening scene (think 6-7PM)

Getting through these huge cloud jungles would be no problem on an elephant the size of a mountain! He forms lightning platforms under his feet to get across wide chasms.

Flying 30,000+ feet in the air on a huge, winged palomino unicorn… Hard to think of something more fun (or scarier, depending on your fear of heights)!

Riding on Stanley the Giant Shark

Hmm, how did these otters end up so far down the sea? And, why is this humongous Meg shark with a necktie helping them out?

Riding on top of Ed is really no different from riding on top of a moving mountain.

Can’t wait to add some color to this picture!

Flying with Helen

I’d just like to say that I absolutely love Adobe Illustrator. Pretty happy with how clean the lines look in my illustrations!

But, what’d be even better is the opportunity to ride tens of thousands of feet in the air on top of a huge winged unicorn like Helen! It’d beat riding in a plane.

Riding on Stanley

Imagine riding on a monobrowed battleship the size of a mountain. That’s pretty much what it’s like riding on Stanley. Thousands upon thousands of tons of pure muscle (and fat), yet deceptively fast speeds in the water… Quite a formidable shark!

When making these sketches, I sometimes close my eyes to envision the picture in my mind. Makes it easier for me to decide on the perspective and the composition of each object, character, etc in the picture.

Riding on Vincent

Riding on Vincent would be the only time riding down a pool of lava in the middle of a volcanic eruption would be safe. Lava-resistant fur never stopped this giant lion!

Riding on Helen

Riding on a huge magical horse (aka winged unicorn) like Helen… amazing, but scary. Those otters just aren’t used to being tens of thousands of feet in the air!
